ISLAMABAD, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan and Russia on Tuesday agreed to continue regular consultations on Afghan peace process and support regional initiatives to bring lasting peace in Afghanistan and the region, Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said.

The two sides reached the understanding during a meeting here between Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and Russian President's Special Envoy for Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov.

"The Foreign Minister lauded the important contributions Russia had made in the Afghan peace process including through Moscow Format of Consultations," a Foreign Ministry's statement said.

The Pakistani foreign minister underlined the importance of peace and stability in Afghanistan and appreciated the growing international consensus on the need for a negotiated settlement of the decade old conflict in Afghanistan, the statement said.

During the meeting, Kabulov, who reached here late Monday, appreciated the role of Pakistan as a facilitator in the Afghan peace process.

The Pakistan visit by Kabulov came after both the countries showed their desire to discuss ongoing Afghan peace process, according to Pakistani officials. Kabulov earlier in the day also held a meeting with Pakistani Foreign Secretary Tehmina Janjua.
