ADDIS ABABA, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- African Union (AU) Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has extended condolences following the tragic landslide that resulted in the loss of more than 1,000 lives in Sudan's village of Tarasin.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Youssouf expressed "deep sorrow" over the tragedy, conveying his heartfelt condolences to bereaved families.

The chairperson reaffirmed the AU's unwavering solidarity with the affected people and called on all Sudanese stakeholders to silence the guns and unite in facilitating the swift and effective delivery of emergency humanitarian assistance to those in need.

On Monday, the Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM), one of the armed groups in the Darfur region, revealed that the entire population of a village in Jebel Marra was killed in a landslide caused by the torrential rains on Aug. 31.

The SLM said in a statement that all the residents of Tarasin village, estimated to be more than 1,000 people, died on Sunday, with only one survivor, according to preliminary information.

The SLM had urged the United Nations, as well as regional and international organizations, to help recover the victims' bodies from beneath the rubble. ■
