WASHINGTON, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- Naomi Osaka powered past Coco Gauff 6-3, 6-2 on Monday to reach the US Open women's singles quarterfinals, spoiling the American's run in front of a home crowd.

Unforced errors and service struggles plagued Gauff on center court, while Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, impressed with her controlled aggression and relentless shot-making.

"I just really wanted an opportunity to come out here and play," Osaka said. "This is my favorite court in the world, and it means so much to me to be back here."

The 27-year-old Japanese now faces No. 11 seed Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic.

In other women's action, No. 2 seed Iga Swiatek of Poland cruised into the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Ekaterina Alexandrova.

On the men's side, top-ranked Jannik Sinner of Italy needed just one hour, 21 minutes to dispatch Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik 6-1, 6-1, 6-1. He will face compatriot Lorenzo Musetti, who beat Spain's Jaume Munar 6-3, 6-0, 6-1.

In women's doubles third round action, Alexandrova and China's Zhang Shuai fell 6-3, 6-4 to American veteran Venus Williams and Canada's Leylah Fernandez. Another Chinese player, Yuan Yue, and her Colombian partner Camila Osorio were defeated 6-2, 6-2 by the American-Czech pair of Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova.  ■
